I always look forward to mid-July in Jersey. It is the time of year when our island’s capital, St Helier, throws off its everyday bustle and transforms into one giant, sun-drenched celebration. We affectionately call it the 'Festival Fortnight,' a back-to-back run of weekenders that showcase the very best of our community spirit, coastal beauty, and vibrant heritage. With the historic Fête de St Hélier arriving on the 18th of July, quickly followed by the beloved Havre des Pas Seaside Festival the next weekend, there is no better time to plan a town-based staycation or a lively day trip.

To really understand St Helier, you have to see it during the Fête. Celebrating Jersey's patron saint, this massive free street festival turns the normally busy town centre—stretching from the Town Hall down through York Street—into a pedestrian-friendly playground. It’s an authentic slice of island culture that appeals as much to visiting families as it does to locals catching up over a cider.
Expect the streets to be lined with artisan craft stalls, local produce vendors, and fascinating Norman heritage displays that nod to our historical ties with France. The atmosphere is consistently brilliant, helped along by an eclectic line-up of live musicians on outdoor stages. If you are bringing the kids, make sure to look out for the 'Jersey Showman' and his mesmerising giant bubbles, which are always a highlight of the weekend. Because it’s right in the town centre, getting there by bus or walking from a local hotel is incredibly straightforward.
Just as the bunting comes down in the town square, the party moves south to the coast for the Havre des Pas Seaside Festival. This is arguably one of the most beloved dates on the Jersey summer calendar. The iconic Victorian swimming lido and the surrounding promenade are closed to traffic and opened up for a sprawling, sun-soaked beach party.
For a small entry fee on the door (£3 for the day, or £5 for the weekend), you get access to al fresco dining along the seafront, multiple live music stages right on the beach, and a quintessentially Jersey summer vibe. My top tip is to arrive early on Saturday afternoon to grab a good spot overlooking the lido, grab some local street food from the promenade vendors, and settle in for an evening of dancing as the sun goes down over the bay.
If you are extending your July visit into the end of the month and need a reflective, quiet hour away from the festival crowds, St Helier has you covered. Launching on the 31st of July is 'Full Bloom', a beautiful new exhibition by talented local artist Danny Booth. Housed centrally at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House on Church Street, the exhibition is a nature-inspired sensory journey. It’s entirely free to enter and provides a brilliant, high-quality cultural palate cleanser before dinner.
Navigating town during festival season is thirsty work, and you will want to have a few reliable spots up your sleeve for a sit-down meal away from the street stalls. For a relaxed but refined experience right in the heart of St Helier, I highly recommend booking a table at La Bastille Bar & Brasserie. Tucked away on Queen Street, it offers an elegant, calm escape from the bustling streets, serving carefully crafted dishes in a warm, welcoming room.
Alternatively, if you are looking for a fast, fresh, and friendly option—perhaps before wandering over to the evening entertainment—head to Red House Coffee, Bar & Pizzeria on Bath Street. They make proper, fresh pizzas cooked quickly in a wood-fired oven. It’s got a great, social atmosphere that perfectly matches the festival mood, and the prices are wonderfully reasonable.
If you want to delve deeper into the island’s history between the street parties and beach stages, pop over to the Weighbridge and explore the Jersey Museum & Art Gallery. It features a beautifully restored Victorian House that provides a fascinating look into the island's past, along with the 'aspiring Jersey Island Geopark' Visitor Centre.
For those who prefer to keep their feet moving, you can pair the festivals with a guided walk. Stroll In Jersey offers fantastic tours led by an experienced local guide. Whether you are interested in wartime history, twilight walks, or urban exploration, it’s a brilliant way to uncover the hidden stories behind the streets you’re celebrating on.
To fully experience St Helier’s Festival Fortnight, staying centrally is the smart move. If you want to wake up just steps away from the Havre des Pas seaside action, the Thalatta Guest House is a fantastic, welcoming base right on Cleveland Road near the beach, famous for its amazing breakfasts.
If you prefer a boutique town centre experience, The Savoy Jersey on Rouge Bouillon is superb. It’s sophisticated, features a jazz bar, and even boasts a seasonal outdoor pool for those hot July afternoons. Lastly, if you are travelling with the family for the Fête, The Merton Hotel on Belvedere Hill is a stellar choice, complete with its own resort-style indoor pool and waterslides to keep the kids entertained long after the street festivals wind down.
Whatever your plans this July, make sure to leave some room for spontaneity. The beauty of St Helier’s festival season is simply wandering from one stage to the next, finding a new favourite local band, and soaking in the very best of a Jersey summer. Enjoy the celebrations!
