Ah, the British summer. There is something undeniably magical about packing a hamper, throwing a picnic blanket over your shoulder, and heading out for an evening of open-air entertainment. The scent of cut grass, the popping of corks, and the slow fade of the evening light make outdoor theatre a beloved seasonal staple. This late July and August, the Jersey Arts Centre is moving outdoors, and they are bringing a riotous reimagining of a classic with them.

If you have never seen an Oddsocks production before, you are in for a treat. They are renowned across the UK for taking the works of the Bard and injecting them with a hearty dose of irreverence, physical comedy, and modern music. A Midsummer Night's Dream is already one of Shakespeare’s most accessible and hilarious comedies, filled with mischievous fairies, confused lovers, and a theatrical troupe completely out of their depth. In the hands of Oddsocks, it transforms into a loud, interactive, laugh-out-loud spectacle that genuinely appeals to all ages.
You do not need an English literature degree to follow along. The performances are highly visual, endlessly energetic, and usually involve a fair bit of good-natured audience participation. It is the perfect introduction to Shakespeare for younger audiences and a brilliantly fun night out for adults.
Al-fresco theatre comes with its own set of rules for comfort. First and foremost, seating is entirely up to you. You are pitching up on the grass, so bringing a high-quality picnic blanket is essential. I always recommend one with a waterproof backing, just in case the morning dew has left the ground slightly damp. If you prefer a bit more back support, folding camping chairs are usually welcome, but be mindful to set up towards the back or the sides so you do not block the view of those lounging on blankets.
The weather in Jersey during July and August is typically glorious, but coastal evenings can bring a sudden drop in temperature once the sun dips below the tree line. Layering is key; bring a cosy jumper or a spare blanket to wrap around your shoulders as the second act begins. Finally, a little bug spray never goes amiss when you are spending dusk in a park!
As for getting there, the park is very well connected. If you are staying in town, the number 15 and 12a buses both run frequently along the avenue and drop you right by the entrance. Alternatively, it is a lovely flat cycle ride along the sea wall from St Helier.
The performances take place at Coronation Park, affectionately known to many locals as Millbrook Park. Situated in St Lawrence directly opposite the sweeping curve of St Aubin's Bay, it is a fantastic location for outdoor events. During the day, the park is a hub of activity with its large playgrounds and paddling pool, but by the early evening, the grassy expanses beneath the mature, leafy trees provide a wonderfully intimate and sheltered amphitheatre for the stage. It is a lovely, enclosed space that feels completely detached from the bustle of the nearby coast road.
While packing your own hamper of cheese, crackers, and a chilled bottle of wine is a classic approach to outdoor theatre, you might prefer to let someone else do the cooking. If you are looking for an exceptional pre-theatre dinner, I highly recommend booking a table at Mark Jordan at the Beach. Located just a short distance along the bay, this chic, relaxed restaurant serves skilfully cooked local produce in a dining room with a glass-walled terrace. The bay vistas are stunning, making it a brilliant spot to watch the early evening light before heading to the park for the show.
Alternatively, if you are travelling out from St Helier and want something a bit more casual but incredibly satisfying, you could stop in town first. Head over to the Red House Coffee, Bar & Pizzeria in the West Centre. They serve proper, fresh, wood-fired pizzas in a really friendly, relaxed atmosphere. It is the kind of fast, high-quality meal that perfectly sets you up for a fun, informal evening of comedy.
If you have the whole day free before the curtain rises, Jersey has plenty to keep you occupied. To really get a feel for the island’s rich heritage, you could book a morning or afternoon tour with Stroll In Jersey. Run by Alan Ley, these guided walks are highly rated and cover everything from wartime history to local culture. It is an excellent way to stretch your legs and learn something new before you settle down on the grass for the evening's entertainment.
For visitors flying in to catch the summer arts season, picking a central base makes logistics effortless. The Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Jersey is an outstanding choice. Situated right on the marina in St Helier, it offers relaxed, contemporary rooms with beautiful bay views. From the hotel, you can easily access the town centre for dining, and you are perfectly positioned to walk, cycle, or catch a short bus ride along the seafront straight to Coronation Park.
The al-fresco season at the Jersey Arts Centre is always a major highlight of the island's summer calendar, and events at the park frequently sell out well in advance. My advice is to secure your tickets early, rally your friends or family, and start planning your picnic menu. I look forward to seeing you on the lawn!
