Looking slightly ahead, July starts off incredibly strong with massive events like the Out-There electronic music festival at Val de la Mare. But amidst all these fabulous weekend highlights, there is one summer-long wellness tradition that truly captures the spirit of island living. Throughout July and August, the National Trust for Jersey, in partnership with Jersey Hospice Care, is hosting the highly anticipated 30 Bays Summer Challenge Jersey.
Celebrating its impressive 10th-anniversary milestone this year, the challenge invites locals and visitors alike to brave the coastal waters and complete a wild sea swim in 30 different bays around the island. Whether you’re a seasoned year-round dipper or someone who usually prefers their water heated to bath temperatures, this is a fantastic excuse to explore Jersey's dramatic shorelines.

The beauty of this challenge is its sheer flexibility. You do not need to swim 30 days in a row, nor do you have to tackle the bays in any specific order. It’s entirely self-paced, meaning you can squeeze in a quick dip before work, dedicate a whole weekend to ticking off multiple coves, or simply enjoy a leisurely family day out.
By registering, your fee goes directly towards supporting two incredible local charities: the National Trust for Jersey, which works tirelessly to protect our island's natural beauty, and Jersey Hospice Care. It’s a wonderful way to give back while simultaneously doing wonders for your own physical and mental wellbeing. From the rugged charm of Bouley Bay on the north coast to the pristine sands of Beauport, the challenge guarantees you’ll discover hidden corners of the island you might otherwise never have seen.
Before you pack your favourite swimming costume, remember that wild swimming in Jersey requires a bit of practical planning. Our island boasts one of the most dramatic tidal ranges in the entire world. What looks like a calm, shallow paddling spot at low tide can transform drastically a few hours later. When planning your daily challenge dips, it’s absolutely essential to consult the local tide tables and check the weather forecast. If you are unsure of the conditions, always opt for the larger, lifeguarded beaches.
After plunging into the Atlantic, nothing quite beats the feeling of wrapping your hands around a warm drink or tucking into a massive lunch. To help you plan your swimming itinerary, here are a few brilliant bays paired with fantastic nearby spots to refuel.
St Ouen's Bay dominates the west coast and is an absolute must for your 30 Bays list. The water here is fresh, invigorating, and famous among the local surfing community. Once you've dried off, head straight to El Tico. This iconic beach cantina is the ultimate spot for a massive breakfast or some beachside fish and chips. The fresh seafood is superb, and grabbing a table here as the sun starts to set is a genuinely magical Jersey experience.
Tucked away next to the popular St Brelade's Bay, Ouaisné (pronounced way-nay) offers a slightly quieter swimming experience. It is incredibly scenic, often sheltered, and flanked by a beautiful nature reserve. Just a stone's throw from the sand, you'll find the Old Smugglers Inn. This proper old, local pub is tremendously welcoming. With a fantastic selection of drinks and hearty pub grub, it’s the perfect place to warm up by the fire if the sea breeze picks up.
If you are ticking off the coastal stretch between St Aubin and St Helier, the sweeping curve of St Aubin's Bay is ideal for a high-tide dip. After your swim, take a leisurely wander over to The Lookout Beach Cafe & Restaurant at First Tower. It’s a super cute little café right beside the beach, serving up fantastic brunches and delicious chicken burgers with sublime cheesy fries. The relaxed ambience makes it an ideal pitstop.
While you might tick off nearby sheltered coves rather than swimming right at the treacherous lighthouse rocks, the south-west corner of the island is breathtaking for an evening visit. Once you’ve completed your swims for the day, head to Corbiere Phare for dinner. The panoramic sunset views across the lighthouse are spectacular, and their Basque chocolate cheesecake is the perfect reward after a day spent in the saltwater.
If you are travelling to Jersey specifically to kick off the challenge, or perhaps you're coming over for the massive Out-There Festival in early July, making St Helier your base camp makes a lot of logistical sense.
For a highly central location with sweeping harbour views, the Pomme d’Or Hotel in Liberation Square is a fantastic choice. You can enjoy a luxurious seafood dinner here, easily catch the official festival shuttle buses, or take a short evening stroll to the Jersey Opera House if you’re catching a West End classic.
Alternatively, if you're looking for an exceptional luxury base with top-tier spa facilities for some post-swim recovery, book a room at The Royal Yacht Hotel & Spa. You can grab a vibrant al fresco lunch at their waterfront venues before heading out for your afternoon dip.
Summer in Jersey isn't just about the beach. If you need a day out of the sun, head into St Helier to visit the Jersey Museum & Art Gallery. Their fascinating new Seeing The Light exhibition showcases rare, previously unseen works exploring how the island's exceptional natural light has captivated artists over the centuries. It’s an absolute must for art and history lovers alike.
Finally, if you want to experience the ultimate offshore wild swim, consider booking a trip with Jersey Seafaris. Their high-speed RIB boat tours can whisk you away to remote, stunning archipelagos like Les Écréhous and Les Minquiers. Getting to swim in these crystal-clear, sheltered waters, while keeping an eye out for local dolphin pods, is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience to cap off your summer.
Whether you’re embarking on the 30 Bays Summer Challenge, catching an alfresco art exhibition, or just looking for the perfect beachside lunch, July in Jersey is shaping up to be spectacular. Let me know which bay ends up being your absolute favourite!
See you in the water,
Alyssa
