Memories of the Occupation remain strong to this day. It certainly had an enduring impact on those that lived through it and left powerful memories of endurance, adaptability and anxiety in equal measure.
During those 5 bleak years, a central preoccupation of those living on the island, both civilian and military, was finding enough food. The German Military Government quickly recognised the importance of keeping a tight rein on the vital agricultural sector. Every aspect was controlled, from crops to fertilisers, livestock to storage. However, despite every effort, controlling local pig breeding proved a harder nut to crack.
