Throughout his life, Tony curated, composed and performed music. He loved improvisation and different sonic approaches to film, from a sound and music perspective. This evolved into his ‘Reaction’ and ‘Tank’ series of events during the IndieCork festival, where he put composers on stage responding to short experimental films or improvising together live for the first time in front of an audience. Everything was chosen for its originality and diversity and the joy of happening in-the-moment. Tony had moved into film composition in recent years, and had begun to collaborate in sound recording for other artists. He leaves behind a large body of work, and today we screen just two, very short, examples from opposite ends not only of his timeline, but of his taste. From the experimental, to the ethnographic, these films are made many years apart from exemplify his curious mind and ear. Blackpool Director: Tony Langlois / 2024 / 9 mins As a soundscape and soundtrack composer for film, Tony had worked on a horror feature, an experimental ethnographic documentary and several short films in recent years. This short reflects his playful observation of the Blackpool neighbourhood of Cork city, where the lights don’t behave themselves, the carpark sings at night, and giant jellyfish descend. The soundtrack was composed as a showcase of the sound-composition styles he could offer to prospective film collaborators. Tarab El Gharnati / Andalous Music From Algeria Director: Tony Langlois / 2007 / 20 mins Made during a foray to Tlemcen, Algeria with a group of Irish filmmakers and musicians, this is a documentation of a highly regarded Andalusian orchestra, in their own rehearsal room. Here, in fine ethno style, Tony captures not only the music, but the silent nods and conversations between the musicians, their secret language. The setting up of this recording and background work, required all Tony’s skill and diplomacy in making it happen and it paid off in this fine filmic record, where the language of music and cinema meet subtely.
