These courses are aimed at Registered Nurses working in adult social care, staff interested in attending can attend individual session (£30 per person) or the whole day (£80 per person), please indicate when booking.
Continence Assessments Course Content
· The definitions and causes of causes of urinary and bowel dysfunction
· Assessment of bladder and bowel function
· The role of pharmacology and prescribing to manage bladder and bowel dysfunction
· The role of infection prevention control and care of the environment when undertaking bowel assessment / management
· The role of containment products and other continence devices
· Information relating to provision of continence products
Catheter Best Practice Course Content
· Identify the anatomy and physiology of Bladder and Urethra
· Demonstrate how to insert and secure urethral and supra pubic catheters
· Understand managing urethral catheters
· Understand managing supra pubic catheters
· Identify potential contraindication and complication with all the types of catheterisations and demonstrate problem solving skills
· Review catheter care and education for patients
· Understand use of the continence formulary
· Understand medication and catheterisation
· Have an awareness of Autonomic Dysreflexia
· Understand the procedure for taking a Catheter Specimen of Urine
· Understand infection Prevention & Control relating to Catheters
Bowel Care and Digital Rectal Skills
Course Content
· Anatomy and physiology of the bowel
· Definitions and causes of bowel dysfunction
· How to assess bowel dysfunction (including DRE)
· The role of interventions to improve and maintain bowel function (including DRF and DRS)
· Explanation the role of pharmacology and prescribing to manage bowel dysfunction
· Explanation how to identify and treat bowel care emergencies and complications
· Explanation of the roles of consent, confidentiality, chaperoning, privacy and dignity, communication, documentation in relation to managing bowel dysfunction
· Explanation of the importance of risk assessment in relation to managing bowel dysfunction
· Explanation of the role of infection prevention control and care of the environment when undertaking bowel assessment / management
· Explanation of the role of health care assistants in relation to bowel management
· Demonstrate Digital Rectal Examination (DRE), Digital Removal of Faeces (DRF), Digital Rectal Stimulation (DRS)
09.30 – 11.30 – Continence Assessments
12.00 – 14.00 – Catheter Best Practice
14.30 – 16.30 – Bowel Care & Digital Rectal Skills
