Looking for Claude - 70 Years On

St. Brelade's Bay Hotel, Jersey

Details

A guided walk with Monty Losh followed by a talk with special guest expert, Claire Follain. Complimentary refreshments will be served. This is a special one-off event to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the death of the remarkable Claude Cahun. Claude Cahun was the artistic name for Lucy Schwob the romantic and creative partner of Marcel Moore (Suzanne Malherbe). Both made a name for themselves in surrealist/political circles in 1920-30s Paris challenging orthodoxy and fighting fascism before deciding to move to Jersey in 1937. Although they came to Jersey for a ‘quiet life’ they suddenly had to make a choice in 1940 when the island fell under Nazi-German occupation. Should they stay or go? They decided to stay … but to resist. And their resistance was remarkable. The walk will leave from St Brelade’s Bay Hotel at 3pm. it will last approx. one hour and will be a short distance and easy with several stops. Afterwards (from 4pm – 5pm) we will go to the Church Hall of St Brelade for complimentary refreshments and a special talk with Cahun expert and historian Claire Follain. Claire studied Contemporary History and French and it was at this time that she first became acquainted with the story of Cahun and Moore. One of her early jobs was to sort through the recently acquired personal archive of Claude Cahun which had come into the ownership of Jersey Heritage. Claire will tell us about some of the interesting items she discovered in those archives and give us a new and personal perspective on the compelling Story of Lucy and Suzanne (Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore). Guests are welcome to come to both or either part (walk and talk). Book here or just turn up and pay on the day.
