Sunday 22nd September is the Autumn Equinox, which is one of two occasions when day and night are pretty much of equal length for everyone across the globe. Just a couple of days before this significant change of seasons we shall take a short evening stroll with wildlife stops and hopefully be dazzled by a beautiful sunset over St Ouen’s Bay. The hour before sunset is known as the ‘golden hour’ and is a perfect time for viewing wildlife as it prepares for the night ahead. We shall be looking out for Marsh Harrier as they come into roost at the reed beds, listening for the evensong of Blackbird and Robin or the unearthly squawk of a Water Rail. As the light fades there is a good chance of seeing Barn Owl as they fly silently over the grassland looking for prey. We shall bring along a bat detector as various species of these night-flying mammals can often be found in this very special area.
