Once checked in, getting to your allocated rooms can be a bit of a mission. There are a couple of lifts, they are tiny and painfully slow and seem to be permanently in use by elderly guests going up or down by one floor! The rooms, as you might expect in a large hotel, do vary from the modern and spacious to the quite small and a little dated. What is generally in short supply is a room with a decent view! Many rooms do not have anything that could be considered as a view of any description (single rooms seem to be the worst). However, looking out over St Hellier currently is not an enjoyable sight, a forest of construction cranes and acres of scaffolding with a tiny sliver of sea in the far distance. In fairness, our room was pretty good, spacious with a large bathroom with bath and shower. Surprised to find no mini-bar and no fridge, although there was an iron and ironing board! Maid service was pretty basic and our carpet did not see a hoover in the entire week we were there. Oh, and our view was of a roof.
Facilities. The pool area is excellent and well maintained. There is a Spa, did not venture in as the treatment prices were eye watering. As for eating and drinking, this is all concentrated in one small area. This serves as breakfast room, bar area and day/evening dining. Breakfast is pretty standard hotel fare with a good selection of well cooked hot and cold options. Avoid the 'scrambled egg' which is not that great - poached, boiled and fried eggs are available to order - as is porridge - but this is not widely advertised. There is a larger dining area off to the side, but this is bland and basic with cheap furnishings and I'm afraid resembles a 1960's works canteen. As for main meals, there is a day menu and an evening (after 6.30) menu. These are limited in choice (particularly for vegetarians) and remains unchanged from day to day. The quality of the meals is average at best and prices are pretty steep. There is usually a special but this was nearly always priced at over £30 a head for one course. There is an additional covered outdoor dining area, this is unusable when it rains as the roof leaks like a sieve. Beyond this is a terrace with tables and chairs for smokers to relax with a drink.
Staff in the hotel were, in general, very friendly and helpful, our maid less so, and could only manage the odd grunt.
In conclusion, I fear this hotel is to some extent trading on its fading elegance from a bygone era, but that elegance is no longer there. It suffers from a poor location and a lack of atmosphere. I feel there are better hotels in Jersey with better locations and better prices.
