Details

The Jersey Jewish Congregation is an Ashkenazi Orthodox community with a synagogue located in St. Brelade. The first records of Jewish people living in Jersey date back to the 1790s, with the Old Hebrew Congregation being founded in 1843, though it dissolved in 1870 due to a lack of members. A new congregation was established in 1960, and the current synagogue, a former Wesleyan Methodist schoolroom, was consecrated in 1972. The community experienced a peak in the 1960s and 1970s but has seen fluctuating numbers since 2000.

During World War II, Jersey was occupied by the Nazis, and the Jewish residents faced the same restrictions as those in mainland occupied Europe, with many being transported to Auschwitz or slave labour camps. Despite its small size, the congregation is known for its community spirit and has been involved in projects such as the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust's '80 Candles for 80 Years'. Services are often led by lay readers, with a rabbi or chazzan visiting for the High Holidays. The community imports kosher food, which is available in local supermarkets.
