Details

The Fishermen's Chapel (French: Chapelle-ès-Pêcheurs, Jèrriais: Chapelle ès Pêtcheurs) is a small chapel located beside St Brelade's Church in St Brelade, Jersey, by the shore at the western end of St Brelade's Bay. The chapel's name was once thought to be associated with fishing guilds, but a more convincing theory suggests "pêcheurs" (fishermen) is a corruption of "pécheurs" (sinners), aligning with archaeological findings that it was a "chantry chapel" funded by a local family for masses for the dead.

Originally a timber building on the site of a 6th-century monastic church, it was rebuilt in stone in the 11th-12th century. For nearly 300 years, it remained a single-cell building until the 14th century when it was adapted as a chantry and burial place for a prominent family. The stone roof was raised in the 14th century. Medieval wall paintings were discovered in 1918. During the Reformation in 1550, it was converted into an armoury. Restoration work has been carried out over the years, with significant work in 1973, including retiling the roof and paving the floor with granite.

I walked along St.Brelade promenade and through the gardens to the small Fisherman's Chapel. You can walk along the beach or a short distance on the road. The Chapel was built in the 11- 12th century although some claim even earlier. The mediaeval paintings are breathtaking. This is a must see attraction.

This is a small and very bare (other than the walls) chapel adjacent to St. Brelades Church. Whilst a lot of the walls are whitewashed and bare, there are some inscriptions and artwork inside that are quite unique. The chapel avoided damage by reformers and it is reputed some of the walls might date to the 6th Century.
