Details

Perfectly situated overlooking St. Ouen's Pond, the Wetland Centre offers an opportunity to view the diverse bird life at La Mare au Seigneur and learn about the reserve's wildlife and rich history, safeguarded by The National Trust for Jersey since 1975. The centre is accessed by a tunnel through a dune mound, opening to panoramic views of the reed bed and pond, providing a unique perspective for birdwatchers without disturbing the wildlife.

The state-of-the-art bird hide also serves as a wetland interpretation centre. Visitors of all ages can learn about the wetlands, diverse wildlife, and human history of La Mare au Seigneur SSI nature reserve through interpretation panels, interactive exhibits, and a large TV screen displaying live footage from cameras within the reserve. One camera allows visitors to navigate within the reed bed, offering insights into the lives of inhabitants like the Marsh Harrier and Bittern. Interactive multimedia touchscreens showcase area wildlife, and painted bird panels by local artist Anna Le Moine Gray provide identification information. A converted German personnel bunker serves as an educational space.

Really interesting free bird hide with lots of information and excellent viewing opportunities, as well as cameras to identify wildlife around the pond close-up.

We stopped at The National Trust for Jersey Wetland Centre as it was the end of our walk from La Corbière. It looked rather unassuming from the outside, but walk through the door and it’s a very impressive setup. There are a range of different hides to watch the wildlife, all set within an old bunker. There is plenty of information, and a live camera feed too, which allows you to zoom right in on the many different birds and animals at the site. It’s small, but really worth a stop if you’re in the area.

The Wetlands is a large natural pond and reeds where you can see an interesting mix of birds. It is opposite Sands on the Five Mike Road. You can park at Sands or buses stop outside. There is a cafe with toilets at Sands. You enter into an education centre that also acts as a hide, give excellent views over the Wetlands. There are many migratory species to be seen in Autumn and Spring and a detailed World map showing where the birds have come from and how far. Late May or early June you can also walk through the wild Orchid fields further along towwards Frances Le Sueur Centre, which are ablaze with colour.

Great for bird watching and seeing Marsh Harriers coming in to roost. Lots of info about birds to be found at St Ouens Pond and other info about this part of the island. Good for all age groups. Free entry
