Perfectly situated overlooking St. Ouen's Pond, the Wetland Centre offers an opportunity to view the diverse bird life at La Mare au Seigneur and learn about the reserve's wildlife and rich history, safeguarded by The National Trust for Jersey since 1975. The centre is accessed by a tunnel through a dune mound, opening to panoramic views of the reed bed and pond, providing a unique perspective for birdwatchers without disturbing the wildlife.
The state-of-the-art bird hide also serves as a wetland interpretation centre. Visitors of all ages can learn about the wetlands, diverse wildlife, and human history of La Mare au Seigneur SSI nature reserve through interpretation panels, interactive exhibits, and a large TV screen displaying live footage from cameras within the reserve. One camera allows visitors to navigate within the reed bed, offering insights into the lives of inhabitants like the Marsh Harrier and Bittern. Interactive multimedia touchscreens showcase area wildlife, and painted bird panels by local artist Anna Le Moine Gray provide identification information. A converted German personnel bunker serves as an educational space.
