La Hougue Bie is a historic site in Grouville, Jersey, and is considered one of the ten oldest buildings in the world, with its Neolithic passage grave dating back to 4000-3500 BC. The site features this ancient chamber, which was once a sacred space for rituals and ceremonies, aligned with the rising sun at the spring and summer equinoxes. Visitors can explore this passage grave, a 16th-century Christian chapel built on top of the prehistoric mound, a replica Neolithic Longhouse, and a German command bunker from World War II that now houses a memorial to forced workers.
The museum at La Hougue Bie allows visitors to delve into Jersey's rich history, from Neolithic times to the German Occupation during World War II. It houses an archaeology and geology museum, showcasing collections including coin hoards, axes, and spears. A significant exhibit explores the world's largest Celtic coin hoard, Le Câtillon II, discovered in Jersey. The site also offers insights into life in the New Stone Age through its replica Longhouse and provides a space for reflection at the Memorial to the Forced Workers.
