Details

Mont Orgueil Castle, also known as Gorey Castle, has cast its imposing shadow over the beautiful fishing port of Gorey for more than 800 years. It is one of the finest examples of a medieval fortress in existence and stands as a symbol of Jersey's national identity and independent character. Construction of the castle began around 1204, following the division of the Duchy of Normandy, to protect Jersey from French invasion. For centuries, it served as Jersey's primary stronghold and the seat of royal authority on the island.

Visitors can explore a network of staircases, towers, and secret rooms, discovering hidden treasures and learning about the castle's gruesome past through specially commissioned artwork. From the battlements, one can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the distant French coast. The castle has served various purposes throughout its history, including a prison and a German military base during World War II. Today, Mont Orgueil is a popular museum and heritage site managed by the Jersey Heritage Trust, offering insights into the island's fascinating history.

Really loved coming here. Nice little harbour with some restaurants and shops etc. You could walk up to the castle with stunning views along the way and even spotted little lizards in the wall in the sun.
Everything was great until we got in to the castle and are required to pay £18.95 each to go any further of which we thought was a bit steep which would have been the best part of £40 for the 2 of us. So we continued around the grounds and back down to the harbour which we didn't mind but would have been great to go through the castle.

Another Jersey Heritage maintained castle and well worth the steep climb to go visit. Not only does it offer an insight into the rich history of Jersey. But in my opinion offers some of the best views from the top of the east/south of the island with some views of France on clear days.

It’s a splendid medieval castle with breathtaking views from below and above. Make sure to check every room and corridor because they are multiple hidden mini exhibitions. We actually enjoyed it more than the Elizabeth Castle that’s number 1 across various guides.

Unfortunately, we showed up just as they were closing the castle at 1610. We misread the hours online.
Hours: 10-1600 (open till 1730 Fridays only)
It was still a nice walk up and view of the beach from outside the castle.
