Jersey Zoo, formerly Durrell Wildlife Park, was established in 1959 by naturalist and writer Gerald Durrell. Operated by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, the zoo is set in 32 acres of landscaped parkland and water-gardens in Trinity, Jersey. It is dedicated to conserving rare and endangered species, housing over 130 species of mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. The zoo's mission extends beyond its grounds, managing breeding programs for release back to the wild, developing conservation tools and skills, training conservationists, and educating visitors.
As a center of excellence in animal husbandry, research, training, and education, Jersey Zoo plays a significant global conservation role by breeding some of the world's most endangered species. The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, headquartered at the zoo, works to not only prevent extinctions but also to recover populations of threatened species and promote the rewilding of ecosystems worldwide. On-site facilities include cafés, glamping, a hostel, the Durrell Conservation Academy, and a charity shop.
