The Jersey War Tunnels, also known as Hohlgangsanlage 8 (Ho8), are a significant historical site in St. Lawrence, Jersey. Originally built by German occupying forces during World War II using forced labour, this vast underground complex of over 1,000 meters of tunnels was intended as a barracks and ammunition store to withstand Allied air raids and bombardment. In 1943, as D-Day approached, the complex was partially converted into an emergency hospital.
Today, the Jersey War Tunnels serve as a museum that tells the compelling story of the German Occupation of Jersey and the experiences of the islanders. The exhibits within the tunnels offer a poignant insight into daily life, the challenges faced, and the acts of resistance during those five years. Visitors can explore the tunnel complex, which houses the "Captive Island" exhibition, the Garden of Reflection, a visitor centre, a café, and a gift shop. The site aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of this period of Jersey's history and is considered a well-preserved example of WWII German engineering in Europe.
