Strongpoint Corbière stands as a formidable German infantry strongpoint, forming a crucial part of Hitler's Atlantic Wall at Jersey’s dramatic southwestern tip. This historically significant site offers a compelling glimpse into the island's occupation during World War II, boasting a remarkable concentration of six robust fortifications with two-meter thick concrete walls and ceilings. Its commanding position on the Corbière headland, overlooking the iconic lighthouse, imbues the area with a poignant, evocative atmosphere, making it a particularly striking and memorable destination for visitors.
Exploring the strongpoint reveals an unusual interconnected bunker complex, including an M19 automatic fortress mortar position and a six-loopholed machine-gun bunker, both linked by an impressive underground tunnel. Volunteers from the Channel Islands Occupation Society (CIOS) have diligently restored three of these bunkers to their authentic wartime condition, featuring displays based on firsthand accounts from soldiers who served there and details about the forced labourers involved in construction. A notable highlight is the "Kanone 2" casemate, which uniquely retains an original French 10.5cm K331(f) coastal defence gun and other rare armoured components.
