La Table des Marthes

An interesting and unexpected granite Dolmen capstone situated right next to the Old Railway Walk from St Aubin to La Corbière.
There is an information board alongside which details its history and how this lone stone survived various excavations and subsequent destruction during the construction of the railway.

This slab of red granite once lay between the railway lines of a now vanished station. It measures 3.8m long by 2m wide and is .76m thick. Excavation in 1850 showed it is supported at each end by a pillar of piled stones and earth.

The excavation yielded pottery, cinders, burnt stones and broken axes all of which are lost and these finds and the slab's dominating position together strongly suggest that it was once part of a lost megalithic structure.

The name, which my be translated as "The Witnesses' Table", probably derives from the known custom of signing important documents at the slab.

Excellent view & lovely place. There is a nice self cataring apartment close by to stay with family. Also a lighthouse with amazing view.

Hidden behind the bus stop, just to the right, this is a curious Jersey Dolmen. Now collapsed, no one's quite sure how old this dolmen is (likely Neolithic like most on the island) but there's an interesting legal history to it. Worth a look.
